F-1 SEVIS ESSENTIALS

The F-1 SEVIS Essentials program provides a thorough explanation of the rudiments of F-1 Student status and F-1 SEVIS procedures for Designated School Officials who are either new to the profession or who just wish to brush up on their skills. The program is comprised of three levels, each building on the foundations of the previous level. All three levels are necessary to prepare a Designated School Official to perform his/her duties. You will learn the differences between law, policy and practice. Emphasis is placed on regulations, documents, terminology, procedures and case studies. A certificate of completion is awarded upon completion of all three levels.

F-1 SEVIS ESSENTIALS — Level I

J-1 SEVIS ESSENTIALS

The J-1 SEVIS Essentials program is designed for professionals who need a thorough explanation of the rudiments of J-1 exchange visitor status and J-1 SEVIS procedures. Emphasis is placed on regulations, documents, terminology, procedures and case studies.

F-1 SEVIS ISSUES AT INDEPENDENT/PREPARATORY SCHOOLS

Date: November 5-6, 2008
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Location: Holiday Inn — New York City

Day 1:
Who should attend Day 1?

Anyone who interacts with prospective international students and responds to their inquiries about admission, Forms I-20, and obtaining the F-1 visa to enter the U.S. to attend the school.

We will discuss the federal requirements associated with bringing F-1 international students to the U.S. and your school's compliance responsibilities. You will walk away with a clear understanding of best practices to implement at your school!

Day I Topics:
  • Introduction to F-1 Student Status and the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)
  • Issuing the Form I-20
  • Obtaining the F-1 student visa
  • Reporting to School

Day2:
Who should attend Day 2?

Designated School Officials at Preparatory Schools who are responsible for SEVIS reporting and advising F-1 students throughout their enrollment at their schools.

We will discuss the government's requirements for enrolling and transferring your F-1 international students and your school's compliance responsibilities. We will also review what students must do to maintain and regain F-1 status, as well as travel abroad while attending your school. You will walk away with a clear understanding of best practices to implement at your school!

Preparing for Recertification

Description: School recertification is expected to take place beginning in early 2009. We will discus what to expect including:

  • Filing the petition
  • What might SEVP review?
  • What might trigger an on-site visit?
  • What can you do now to get ready?

J-1 SEVIS PRACTICE ISSUES

Date: December 3, 2008, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Description: This program is designed for the experienced practitioner who wants to explore J-1 SEVIS matters more in depth while reviewing the essentials

We will focus on SEVIS 5.8 and 5.10 Releases and revisit the challenges presented by the new 2 year bar on repeat participation and the new maximum period for Professors and Researchers. We will also discuss the new intern sub-category, new pay.gov process and proposed new Sanctions and Fees. Your questions drive the program so please submit them to iets in advance!

OPT Revisited

Description: This program is for DSOs who want to get a thorough grasp of all the changes in OPT that occurred this year. Attendees should understand the basics of OPT eligibility and application procedures. We will discuss:

  • The new definition of OPT: Standard OPT, STEM OPT and H-1b Cap Gap Extensions
  • New application and adjudication issues
  • New definition of F-1 D/S while on OPT
  • Reporting requirements: Student and School
